Fatcat Blueprint – Part 5

In this E-course, you’re getting lots of good, real-world information that you can put to use to start growing your own online business.

In part 5, let’s discuss one thing that’s absolutely crucial to your online success: Picking and buying the right domain name. Just in case you don’t know, a domain name is a website’s URL – for instance, Google.com  and Ebay.com are domain names.

Finding a good domain name that brings in plenty of good traffic is not as easy as it used to be a few years ago, since many of the obvious names were taken long ago. Fortunately, with some key strategies I will let you in on you can still find a domain name that will be effective at getting AdSense clicks, if you just take a few extra minutes to search a bit.

Make sure you choose a domain name ending in .com, .net or .org in that order. .com is by far the best choice, though. I would avoid extensions like .info and .biz, even though sometimes they may be cheaper to buy. Keep in mind that these AdSense sites you’re building are assets that you may want to sell at some point down the line, and sites with more obscure extensions are likely to sell for much less than a .com site.

You have to register your domain name with a registrar. Some services I recommend include Godaddy, Moniker, Name, and Dotster. Some people don’t care for GoDaddy for a variety of reasons, including their difficult user interface.

On the other hand GoDaddy is very efficient at transferring domains to other GoDaddy account holders. This is important for people who build and sell websites. Most serious buyers of websites will already have a GoDaddy account, so this makes transferring domain name ownership quick and efficient.

There’s also something called Whois Protection. Normally, you can find out the name and contact details of whoever owns any given website out there. When you use Whois protection, your details are hidden, usually replaced by contact info for your domain registrar, this privacy can be an effective barrier against some of the hackers and other evil types online.
